The author uses a iron as a metaphor for how the woman in the story tells the life of her daughter and why her daughter is the way that she is. In a way the woman lays everything out on the table and irons it out straight. Many single mothers can relate to this story because it tells about the hardships that some unfortunate mothers? have to face. In this story Emily was born during the depression. Her mother had to work because she was a young single parent, as read in the story Emily?s father could ? no longer endure?. I believe that the mother cared for Emily she hated to leave her with her fathers relatives. Olsen wrote that the character did everything by the book she breast fed by the clock like they said. At that time ?they? were the male doctors who thought they knew all about motherhood. As a woman I would think Redmond2 that a woman would know what is best for both the mother and her child. By the end of the story the mother and daughter relationship grew a little closer Emily who lacked meaning found a talent . Emily also gained a sense a sense of responsibility by taking care of her siblings. Olsen uses the iron as a metaphor a number of times through out the story. In the first paragraph the mother says, ?and what you asked me moves back and forth with the iron?. I think that the mother is trying to sort out the good and the bad through out Emily?s life. She tells of what had to be done not what should have been done. The woman realizes that her daughter lacks meaning in life. The mother questions herself on the upbringing of her oldest daughter Emily compared to the other children. In the last sentence of the story it reads ?help make it so that there is cause for her to know that she she is more than this dress on the ironing board, helpless before the iron? What the mother is trying to say is Emily is like she is because that?s how she brought her up it could be un helped at the time the mother is also reassuring herself by thinking she could be worse don?t we all have our faults?

John Calvin "We must remember that Satan has his miracles, too."-John Calvin.1 Mr. John Calvin was the leading French Protestant Reformer and the most important figure in the second generation of the Protestant Reformation.2 He was a contributing catholic. We see why and how he was suck a good religious man by his backround, biography, and contributions to Christianity. He created a thing called "Calvinism"3 which helped form Christianity. His life was certainly a remarkable one. John Calvin's life started on July Tenth, 1509 in Noyon, in picardy, France.4 He was born of two middle class parents. His father was a lay administrator in service of the local bishop.5 So, in Calvin's early years he was immediatly exposed to Catholicism. His native town was an old cathedral city whose bishop was its ruler and was at the same time one of the twelve Peers of France.6 Calvin's mother died very soon in Calvin's life, not much is known about her except she had a great reputation for piety.7 Calvin's life started off with a lot of religion surrounding him. In the years that Calvin was alive there were many govermental factors effecting his childhood as well. At the time of his birth until 1525, the throne of Noyon was occupied by Charles de Hangest who belonged to the nobility of the neighbourhood.8 A lot of his family members were involved in Catholicism, such connections were not without effect upon young Calvin. Growing up John Calvin was not an only child. His father married a young bourgeois, Jeanne Lefranc, who bore him four sons, Charles, Jean (John), Antoine and Francois. They also had two daughters, Marie and another whose name is unknown.9 Francois died at an early age, Charles became a priest and died excommunicated in 1537.10 Marie and Antoine followed the reformer to Geneua, where Antoine assisted his brother in his literary work.11 Clavin's father had great amibitions for his sons and especially for Jean, also known as John. John Calvin's father pressured his to study Law but in 1531 his father died giving Calvin the freedom to resume his religious studies.

My Reasons for Majoring in Business Essay
Why I majored in business? For numerous reasons, I majored in business, some common and others personal. All of my reason shared a goal and that is to graduate with a degree in order to enhance the quality of my life with a successful and fulfilling career. My common reasons for deciding to major in business will most likely be similar to many other students. Those reasons are that the business major had a perceived lower degree of difficulty to complete then that of other majors. The major also offered many different minors that I could pursue, thus giving me a variety of choices. Being that it is the largest major at most universities it offered the most classes at various times, which made making a schedule semester to semester that would fit into a busy life with work easy for me. Finally, the business major offered the best potential for securing a job upon graduation because of the broad scale of jobs out in the ÃârealÃâ world. On a more personal level, I chose the business major because I love business. I love the concept of capitalism, competition, making money from ideas, hard work, other peoples money, leading others in a common goal and achieving that goal, gaining success by incorporating all of these concepts. I have always wanted to be important, to be a boss, to be an owner of a company which I love going to everyday and to do this a degree in business was exactly what I needed. The business major was a logical first step towards this and so I chose to study business here at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell. It wasnÃât till coming here that I chose to minor in marketing and finance in order to create a well rounded foundation and with graduation coming in May I donÃât regret it.

Persepolis Chapter: Eggy On the first of September, cousin Alexis passed away
On the first of September, cousin Alexis passed away. My parents were answering phones and replying to texts. Almost everyone on the opposite end of the line was crying. When they were done, I asked them who Alexis was and what had happened. They told me that Kuya Alexis was my older cousin who would visit the house to see my parents whenever he had the time. They told me he would play and talk to me for hours, and so did his girlfriend Ate Nika. Then they told me that at 10:00 pm last night both of them were shot by three robbers in their house in Quezon City. It was said that their maid let the robbers in and left with them after theyââ¬â¢d stolen jewelry and their laptops. My mom started crying, and my dad left the room. I wondered about how the robbers knew the maid. My mom and dad bought clothes for Alexis and Nika to wear at their funeral. My mom showed me Alexisââ¬â¢ tie; ââ¬Å"This is the first tie I ever gave your father.â⬠It was the ugliest tie Iââ¬â¢ve ever seen, but I guess that made sense for him to wear it. My sister Pimee called saying that she was going to come home for the wake, I was so excited I cleaned my room that we shared for her arrival. She didnââ¬â¢t end up staying with me. On the day of the ceremony, the sky was clear and the sun was shining. We were all asked to wear white, which was weird because Iââ¬â¢m pretty black was the color to wear for these kinds of things. The mass was a blur. The two coffins were beside the altar, but I couldnââ¬â¢t see the bodies; there were too many flowers around them. During the eulogy, several people who knew Alexis went up to speak. Some of them laughed, some of them cried. It was hard at times to understand their stuttering. Most of them called Alexis Eggy, supposedly because his head was shaped like an egg. The wake was unusual. Peopleââ¬â¢s faces were damp, their eyes red and watery, and yet they were still eating snacks and holding on to drinks, as if it was a party. People were mingling, greeting each other with a sad smile and sharing each otherââ¬â¢s connection to Kuya Alexis. I saw Nikaââ¬â¢s father and brother talking with Kuya Alexisââ¬â¢ siblings and mother. I couldnââ¬â¢t explain the expressions on their faces; it was as if the world ended. ââ¬Å"Isabel!â⬠My mom called. I walked to her, and she took my hand ââ¬Å"Would you like to say goodbye to Alexis?â⬠Her voice shook. I nodded, and we both made our way to the coffin. I peered into the wooden case, and there he was, sleeping peacefully. I realized that Eggy was an appropriate nickname, because his head really was egg-shaped. Around his neck was my dadââ¬â¢s tie in all itââ¬â¢s hideous glory, not he would have minded. His skin was a couple of shades darker, and his body looked stiff, but I could still feel warmth radiating from him. I stood there for a few minutes, just looking at his face. He looked like he was going to wake up, so I waited. I got impatient, and before I knew it, my face was damp like the others too. My mom heard me and ran to comfort me. I told her I need to speak to Ate Bettina, Kuya Alexisââ¬â¢ older sister. My mom took me to Bettina and told her that I had something to say. When we found her, I tapped her shoulder and told her this: ââ¬Å"Once, when I got home from ballet at around 10 p.m. Kuya Alexis and Ate Nika where talking to Dad and Mom after dinner. I sat beside Kuya Alexis. He asked me how ballet was and I told him that I wanted to quit. I told him that my classmates keep telling me I should get a life because I can never join them on weekends. I can never go to parties or hang out with them. Itââ¬â¢s just school and ballet, school and ballet. Then Kuya Alexis asked me, ââ¬ËDo you love ballet?ââ¬â¢ And I said yes. Then he said to me, ââ¬ËThen keep on doing it no matter what anyone tells you. I just wanted to tell you that Iââ¬â¢m still in ballet because of him.â⬠She started crying, but she smiled at me and said ââ¬Å"Thank you.â⬠I realized that my white blouse was drenched. When we walked out the church, I looked up and saw that the sky was black. A few seconds later, it started raining.

AV and Semilunar Heart Valves What Are Heart Valves? Valves are flap-like structures that allow blood to flow in one direction. Heart valves are vital to the proper circulation of blood in the body. The heart has two kinds of valves, atrioventricular and semilunar valves. These valves open and close during the cardiac cycle to direct the flow of blood through the heart chambers and out to the rest of the body. Heart valves are formed from elastic connective tissue which provides the flexibility needed to open and close properly. Malfunctioning heart valves inhibit the hearts ability to pump blood and life giving oxygen and nutrients to the cells of the body. Atrioventricular (AV) Valves The atrioventricular valves are thin structures that are composed of endocardium and connective tissue. They are located between the atria and the ventricles. Tricuspid Valve: This heart valve is located between the right atrium and the right ventricle. When closed, it allows oxygen-depleted blood returning to the heart from the venae cavae to fill the right atrium. It also prevents the back flow of blood as it is pumped from the right atrium to the right ventricle. When open, it allows blood from the right atrium to flow into the right ventricle.Mitral Valve:Ã This heart valve is located between the left atrium and left ventricle. When closed, it allows the left atrium to fill with oxygen-rich blood returning to the heart from the pulmonary veins. It opens to allow blood from the left atrium to fill the left ventricle. Semilunar Valves The semilunar valves are flaps of endocardium and connective tissue reinforced by fibers which prevent the valves from turning inside out. They are shaped like a half moon, hence the name semilunar (semi-, -lunar). The semilunar valves are located between the aorta and the left ventricle, and between the pulmonary artery and the right ventricle. Pulmonary Valve: This heart valve is located between the right ventricle and pulmonary artery. When closed, it prevents the back flow of blood as it is pumped from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery. When open, it allows oxygen-depleted blood to be pumped from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery. This blood goes onto the lungs where it picks up oxygen.Aortic Valve: This heart valve is located between the left ventricle and aorta. When closed, it allows blood from the left atrium to fill the left ventricle and prevents the back flow of blood that is pumped from the left ventricle to the aorta. When open, oxygen-rich blood can flow to the aorta and onto the rest of the body. During the cardiac cycle, blood circulates from the right atrium to the right ventricle, from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery, from the pulmonary artery to the lungs, from the lungs to the pulmonary veins, from the pulmonary veins to the left atrium, from the left atrium to the left ventricle, and from the left ventricle to the aorta and on to the rest of the body. In this cycle, blood passes through the tricuspid valve first, then the pulmonary valve, mitral valve, and finally the aortic valve. During the diastole phase of the cardiac cycle, the atrioventricular valves are open and semilunar valves closed. During the systole phase, the atrioventricular valves close and the semilunar valves open. Heart Sounds The audible sounds that can be heard from the heart are made by the closing of the heart valves. These sounds are referred to as the lub-dupp sounds. The lub sound is made by the contraction of the ventricles and the closing of the atrioventricular valves. The dupp sound is made by the semilunar valves closing. Heart Valve Disease When heart valves become damaged or diseased, they dont function properly. If valves dont open and close properly, blood flow becomes disrupted and body cells dont get the nutrient supply they need. The two most common types of valve dysfunction are valve regurgitation and valve stenosis. These conditions put stress on the heart causing it to have to work much harder to circulate blood. Valve regurgitation occurs when valves dont close correctly allowing blood to flow backward into the heart. In valve stenosis, valve openings become narrow due to enlarged or thickened valve flaps. This narrowing restricts blood flow. A number of complications may result from heart valve disease including blood clots, heart failure, and stroke. Damaged valves can sometimes be repaired or replaced with surgery. Artificial Heart Valves Should heart valves become damaged beyond repair, a valve replacement procedure can be performed. Artificial valves constructed from metal, or biological valves derived from human or animal donors can be used as suitable replacements for damaged valves. Mechanical valves are advantageous because they are durable and dont wear out. However, the transplant recipient is required to take blood thinners for life to prevent blood clot formation due to the tendency of blood to clot on artificial material. Biological valves can be derived from cow, pig, horse, and human valves. Transplant recipients are not required to take blood thinners, but biological valves can wear down over time.
